Year 5

Butterflies

Year 5 have been developing their drawing skills. They had to draw a butterfly and then evaluate their work. Each time they re-drew it, they had to pick one feature they wished to improve and focused on it. Eventually, they were able to see their progress from their first butterfly to their last. They then had to in cooperate the butterfly into their own piece of artwork. Previously, they had studied the work of Salvador Dali, Van Gogh and Lucy Arnold and how they had incorporated them into their work. Year 5 then had to use their imagination to create their own image. They were able to choose their own media (drawing pencil, coloured pencil or paint) and their own style (impressionism, surrealism or contemporary).

Tints, Tones and Shades

Year 5 have been developing their painting skills. They were looking at how to create different tints, tones and shades using primary colours (red, blue and yellow) alongside black and white (grey). This developed into them studying different impressionist work and their use of colours. They then had to pick colours out of the artists' work and try create them themselves. Finally, they had to create their own landscape painting by doing a faint sketch first; then use acrylic paint to create the image.

Light, Line and Shadow

Year 5s art topic looked at them developing their light, line and shadow skills. Throughout the topic they have had the opportunity to use a range of different media to create different effects, such as: pencil, fine liners, chalk, charcoal, photography and technology. They also found inspiration behind Pablo Picasso’s continuous line drawing and Rembrandt’s pen and ink work.  Once they had developed their skills they were then left to make their own choices about their final piece and the media they wished to us.
