Welcome to Year 1!
Children's Newspaper Reports from our Giant Eggs Discovery are now displayed and a selection can be found in the main school entrance. Take a few minutes to 'Read All About It' next time you're in school. More will very soon be going up outside the Y1 class room. Have a look at the photos which have been added entitled 'Giant Eggs Evidence' to get a flavour of the event and a sense of what inspired Y1 children to write such amazing articles!
Also, recently added from the Summer term are photos from our Science topic about Plants and some information about what we have been studying in Science and Literacy...We have been Busy Bees indeed!
Pease continue to hear your child read at home every day and sign their reading record, including any comments about how your child has managed the text. Please make sure you write 'Finished' when your child has completed their book. This enables them to choose a new book to take home to read.
This takes place every day in school. Children read texts comprising a range of genres as part of a small group. Questions are asked to assess children's understanding.
Phonics and Spellings
Phonics plays a vital role in children's learning and their ability to read and write. To help develop fluency and children's grasp of the basic skills of Literacy, they need to practise blending and reading words. In the Summer term, all Y1 children take a statutory Phonics Screening Test.
Every Thursday, children will bring home spellings to practise and are expected to hand these in before the following Friday on which is our Spellings Test. They will always be words which we have studied in class during the week.
This needs to be brought in every Monday morning and be kept in school the entire week. It needs to be taken home every Friday afternoon.
